“I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together, we can do great things.”
– Saint Teresa of Calcutta
St. Timothy Faith Formation confirmation students Juliana and Chris joined over 1,000 other volunteers at St. Luke's Mission of Mercy on the morning of November 23rd to help put together thousands of bags of food for a Thankgiving giveaway to feed many in need.
Juliana and Chris started the day by double bagging frozen chickens, then moved to their next assignment where they joined an assembly line of amazing volunteers which meandered throughout the church to gather the various food goods into the Thanksgiving meal bags which ultimately would fill every pew.
St. Luke's Mission of Mercy has been carrying out the corporal works of mercy for a quarter century now. All these food items are either donated or purchased with funds that were donated. This year, volunteers packed approximately 8,000 bags of food for 2,800 families for Thanksgiving. Each year, St. Luke's holds special holiday meal packings for Thanksgiving and Christmas featuring a full meal of chicken, vegetables, and dessert. The food giveaways are an awesome thing to witness, and an even more incredible thing to be a part of.
Juliana and Chris, thank you for helping to provide a full meal for many families who would otherwise feel hunger on Thanksgiving.
"Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me."
- Matthew 25:34-36
"Jesus loves you, dear young people, for you are the means by which he can spread His light and hope. He is counting on your courage, your boldness, and your enthusiasm.
- Pope Francis
On the chilly early morning of Saturday, November 9th, a group of 9th grade students from Saint Timothy's Faith Formation program traveled to St. Luke's MIssion of Mercy. This year marks 25 years that St. Luke's has been following the calling to help God's neediest.
The Saint Timothy's team of Mya, Corey, and Sergio began the day by assisting with several jobs in the kitchen area including unloading food products onto shelves, loading bags of baked goods, breaking down cardboard boxes, tidying up the floors with brooms in hand, and thawing foods that would soon be served.
As noon approached, the St. Timothy's team along with other volunteers from the area took to the various stations for serving lunch. For the next hour, a warm meal was offered to many in need of food who came in from the cold.
Mya, Corey, and Sergio, thank you for your service to others.
“At the end of life, we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in.”
